The Best Bachur Was Taken

“The Best Boy”

R' Paysach Krohn shares a personal story, having become an orphan (yasom) at age 21 and taking on the role of a father figure to his younger siblings.

Young R' Paysach visited the renowned Reb Yaakov Kamenetsky regarding a question about bris milah , and at the same time asked the Rosh Yeshiva for an idea for a shidduch for his youngest sister. R' Yaakov informed him that the "best boy" in the yeshiva had just become engaged the day before. Intrigued, R' Paysach asked what made this boy the “best.” R' Yaakov explained that the boy's father had taught him the entirety of Mishnayos before he even began studying Gemara. This broad foundation had given him the tools to master Gemara with incredible depth and clarity.

Universal Connection

R' Krohn recounts a conversation with a man who had completed the entire Shas of Mishnayos twice by learning 15 mishnayos a day. This man said that learning Mishnayos provides two essential links: To Shas and to Hashem. No matter what shiur one attends — be it Daf Yomi or a specific masechta — he will always feel a connection because he already knows the underlying Mishna.
